Kayti’s Musings: Time to be seen

Kayti's Musings: Time to be seen

I have been asked a couple of times why I am rarely on camera, and so I thought I would talk about that.

I understand internalized fat phobia, we are trying to do the work to help people see themselves as the beautiful humans that they are. I am good at recognizing that, and still I struggle with seeing myself in images and videos.

What that has meant for me is that I don’t get on camera for this much (even though I feel that this is incredibly important work that I am super pleased to be a part of). Worse, it means that I am rarely in pictures with my family, we have no professional seated pictures of our family.

My daughter wants pictures, and will want images to go with the memories of this time in her life.

With the strength that I have gained from reading these fat main characters, and from this amazing community, I am going to try. I will try to be in front of the camera a little more.

Why am I telling you all this? This is a personal demon that causes me a lot of stress. I am a strong believer and supported of fat liberation and I still experience and have parts of my life affects by my own fat phobia. When I was chatting with Alexis about her blog (which was great, thanks again!), I decided I would write this because I am likely not alone.

If you are living an intentionally unseen life, step into the light with me (if you are ready). I will try, and I hope to see you too. We are beautiful and allowed to take up space. We are worth being a part of the visual tapestry of memories for our loved ones.

Let’s try it. I’ll see you in the light.
